Yoga day awareness rally

Through the practices of yoga, we discover that concern for the happiness and well-being of others, including animals, must be an essential part of our own quest for happiness and well-being. The fork can be a powerful weapon of mass destruction or a tool to create peace on Earth, continuing this healthy, holy practice of keeping oneself pure and mentally relaxed.

The idea of establishing a special day to celebrate the art of yoga was proposed by Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. By way of this initiative, the Indian prime minister wanted to bring this unique gift given to us by our ancestors to limelight. He proposed this suggestion during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014.  During his UN address he also suggested that the day should be celebrated on the 21st of June since it is the longest day of the year.

We the students of GITAM NSS wing along with the 19 units have initiated and conducted an awareness rally on 18th June 2018 in the premises of GITAM(Deemed to be university)which was inaugurated by the NSS wing. This Rally was started at 10AM which went on till 12PM. The rally consisted of 627 members who actively participated and continued their efforts to make this program a huge success. The Rally was conducted mainly to spread the awareness of benefits of doing YOGA, and Free YOGA classes were conducted to motivate the students and faculty, which made them to take part on the International Yoga Day.

The idea of International Yoga Day was first proposed by our beloved Prime Minister Narendra on June 21st 2015. India takes immense pride in the fact that Yoga is now practiced in most of the parts of India.

About 311 students have taken part in the event. The day started at 6 A.M. commencing with a Sanskrit sloka and Prana yama. It was followed by Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation which signifies the overall performance of the body. We moved on to the following basic asanas. Tadasana also known as Mountain pose. It signifies one to stand with majestic steadiness like a mountain. Vrikshana also called Tree pose. This pose gives you a sense of grounding. It improves your balance and strengthens your legs and back. It replicates the steady stance of a tree.Bhujangasana also known as Cobra pose. This one will strengthen the lower back muscles and makes your spine flexible.Dhanurasana also known as Bow pose. This is very effective in weight loss program. This yoga posture improves the functions of kidney, pancreas, liver, small and big intestine.Paschimottanasana, this asana helps in improving the flexibility of the hamstrings and hips and lengthens the spine.

Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action. To borrow the words of our Prime Minister “It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well-being. ” This was our attempt to ensure our contribution towards Yoga Day.
